A booklist is a list of the books you recommend (known as “curation”) based on your expertise. Booklists are an incredibly valuable marketing tool for the new business owner. They are quick and easy to create. They will grow as your business grows. They provide a low-pressure space where you can practice creating content and strengthen your content marketing skill. They cost next to nothing to produce.
There’s a very successful copywriter who always says “A book is a brochure that no one throws away” (Robert Bly, Bly.com). Booklists are quite similar in their marketing power.
The books you’ve read can provide insight into what you have found to be most valuable. The books that have influenced, taught, and guided you in your area of expertise. As an example, go here to see a booklist I published.
A booklist is a way to publish content really quickly, with no costs, and very little tech know-how. If you’ve read books and they influenced you, you can publish a booklist, share it with people, and when people buy the books, you’ll earn revenue. The real benefit of this type of marketing activity is not the revenue – it’s that it is content marketing. Booklists give you a really nice and low-pressure space where you can practice creating content. As the curator of your booklist you have potentially provided something others will find valuable. And doing so is part of your credibility foundation.

Benefits of Booklists for Your Content Marketing!
- Easy and quick to create. Booklists are very quick to create and publish. You can even skip adding your own content. For anyone who is new to marketing their own business, I highly recommend booklists.
- Low-pressure environment helps you develop the “muscle” of creating content. When you start creating marketing it can be difficult to write the text. Especially if you’re “not a writer.” Booklists are a great environment to practice writing your marketing text. They are easy to edit and don’t suffer from algorithm paralysis. With my support and structure you’ll find these lists are an easy path to finding your own marketing voice.
- Passive Revenue Stream. Booklists at Bookshop.org pay commission on purchases. They are a perfect example of how content marketing can work passively for you. Following the “create once, benefit many times” principle.
Expert Support Moves Your Business Forward!
When you’re a business owner or leader, perhaps the only employee in your small business, you can find yourself in a vacuum when it comes to having peers with experience and knowledge to talk with.
At large corporations the top leadership is composed of multiple people with vast amounts of experience and knowledge. They work together on the issues impacting their companies. They have skilled staff working for them. Plus financial resources to involve issue-specific experts when needed. But for small businesses things are different.
Small businesses rely on the energy of their owners, often start as side-gigs, and frequently run on a shoe string of financial and expertise resources. You get into small business because you have a product or service that you love and do well, but the surrounding aspects of business operation can trip you up.
You know you need answers. Finding them is what is tricky. You might turn to the Internet, searching for advice to make a decision. Or ask a fellow small business owner for advice. They may not have experience in that particular topic. Or they may share advice that worked for them, but is not tailored to your needs.
For example, on multiple occasions people have offered me financial advice relating to how to form my business’ legal structure, how to pay myself, and where to find business. In all cases those individuals have been well-meaning but gave me the wrong recommendations. Why? They provided advice that worked for them, but did not have the training to identify my unique situation and what would work for me.
These issues are the reason I offer services like the Booklist Creation Project. Because I have been working with small businesses like yours for more than 30 years, I bring knowledge and experience to point you in the best possible direction. Guidance that is based on your unique situation and an understanding of the options available to you.
